Building a capsule wardrobe - The Malaysian Version

Building a capsule wardrobe - The Malaysian Version

We all have that moment when we pick up a piece of eye-catching apparel from the store, only to come home and realize we would only wear it once. We want to lead a slow fashion, and ethical lifestyle, but how do we do it practically?

One of the most fundamental mindset shifts is to start by building a versatile and flexible wardrobe, that would allow us to mix and match different styles and looks for different occasions. Yeap, you might have heard it before, we are learning how to build a capsule wardrobe today!

Building a capsule wardrobe is a great way to simplify our wardrobe and make getting dressed easier. However, building a capsule wardrobe in a tropical country like Malaysia requires some extra consideration. The keywords are : lightweight and breathable.

  1. Choose versatile pieces

How to pick the right basics for ourselves? We always start with the colors. We all love having some fun and funky colors in our wardrobe, but make sure we are equipped with basics with neutral colors like black, white, and beige that can be paired with bold accessories and wears. A pair of classic blue jeans, a white cotton t-shirt, and a simple black dress are all versatile staples that can be dressed up or down.

      2 .Consider the climate

In Malaysia, the weather is hot and humid all year round. This means we should choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable, such as cotton and linen. Look for pieces that are loose-fitting and allow for airflows, such as flowy skirts, loose blouses, and breathable shorts.

    3. Invest in quality pieces

The idea is to invest in high-quality pieces that will last. Look for pieces that are well-made and can withstand repeated wear and washing. A capsule wardrobe also means to only invite what's necessary into our wardrobe, even better if they could turn out to be the ones you can pass on to the next generation! ( Just like our mom's dress )

    4. Don't forget about accessories

Accessories can make or break an outfit, and they can also help you create different looks with the same pieces. The best part of having a basic outfit is to play around with your bold accessories, check out some of our favorite local brands like Oh Dayang!

Our final tip for you is to have fun, and add a little wardrobe 'mantra' for yourself! What we wear often tells so much about who we are, and what is the feeling we wanna get from opening our wardrobe every single day? Mine is always about: be slow, take it one day at a time.
