When RAYS Asked for Merchandise, We Chose a Different Path

A reflection on thoughtful collaboration, unwanted fabric, and what slow fashion looks like beyond the garment.

There is a version of this story where we said yes to a standard brief, produced 900 branded tote bags from new polyester, shipped them to Sarawak, and moved on.

We did not tell that version.

This is the one we told instead and why it matters far beyond the bags themselves.

How It Started

The collaboration began through a connection formed at the Biji-biji Pre-Accelerator Bootcamp.

The programme brought together social enterprises from different backgrounds, all working towards creating positive impact in their own ways. It was there that we met the team behind RAYS 2026 (Rainforest Youth Summit), an event that gathers youth leaders, changemakers, and sustainability advocates in Sarawak.

Months later, that connection turned into a collaboration.

As preparations for RAYS 2026 began, the team was exploring ways to create event merchandise that aligned with the values of the summit. Rather than opting for conventional merchandise, they wanted to create something that reflected their commitment to sustainability and responsible consumption.

That vision led them to Selesa.

The idea was ambitious: produce 900 tote bags using rescued and unwanted fabrics, proving that event merchandise could be both meaningful and impactful.

Our role was to help bring that idea to life.

From sourcing suitable materials and developing the design approach to coordinating production with our artisan community, we worked closely with the RAYS team to transform a sustainability goal into something tangible that participants could carry home.

Looking Beyond Conventional Merchandise

For the RAYS team, merchandise was never meant to be an afterthought.

As a summit centred around environmental stewardship, youth leadership, and sustainable futures, they wanted the event merchandise to embody the same values being discussed on stage.

Rather than producing another standard tote bag made from newly sourced materials, RAYS challenged us to explore whether existing resources could be given a second life.

Together, we looked beyond the conventional approach and asked:

What if event merchandise could reduce waste instead of creating more?

What if every bag could tell a story about resourcefulness, creativity, and community?

Those questions became the foundation of this project.

Finding Value in Unwanted Fabrics

Approximately 720 metres of rescued fabrics were collected from local fabric stores.

Across Malaysia, many fabric stores accumulate end-of-roll fabrics, discontinued prints, and surplus materials that may never find a buyer.

These fabrics are often still beautiful and perfectly usable, but without a clear purpose, they risk being forgotten or discarded.

For this project, we approached local fabric stores and sourced unwanted fabrics that would otherwise remain unused.

Over time, we collected approximately 720 metres of fabric in different colours, textures, prints, and patterns.

Some were floral.
Some were geometric.
Some were bold and colourful.
Others were subtle and understated.

Individually, they looked unrelated.

Together, they became the foundation of something new.

The Selesa Way in Practice

While this project involved tote bags rather than garments, the same principles that guide Selesa shaped every decision.

Choose Better

Instead of sourcing new decorative fabrics, we worked with approximately 720 metres of unwanted fabric collected from local fabric stores. By starting with materials that already existed, we were able to create something useful while extending the life of resources that might otherwise go unused.

Honour Who Made It

Every tote bag was crafted by our artisan community. From sorting fabrics and matching patterns to sewing the final pieces together, their skills and craftsmanship shaped the outcome of each bag. More than a production process, this project created meaningful work and additional income opportunities for our artisan partners.

Know What It Is Made Of

The story of the materials is visible in every tote. Each bag features a unique patchwork outer panel made from rescued fabrics and a patterned upcycled inner lining. Giving the tote bags a two-ways usage based on the mood.

Project Impact

While the project started with a simple idea, it ultimately delivered impact across multiple areas.

Environmental Impact

  • Approximately 720 metres of unwanted fabric given a second life.
Demonstrated how existing materials can be reimagined into meaningful products.

Social Impact

  • Engaged 15 artisan tailors across our community.
Created additional income opportunities to our artisan tailors over a two-month production period

Design Impact

  • 900 unique tote bags produced
  • Reversible design featuring two distinct looks
  • Every bag carries a different combination of rescued fabrics

What We Learned

This project reinforced something we have always believed.

Thoughtful design is not limited to fashion.

The same principles that guide the way we create clothing can also be applied to merchandise, events, and everyday products.

People notice when something is made with care.

They notice when materials have a story.

They notice when products feel intentional rather than disposable.

The response to these tote bags reminded us that consumers are increasingly interested in understanding where products come from and the values behind them.

Looking Ahead

The RAYS tote bag project is not a shift away from what Selesa does.

We remain, first and foremost, a slow fashion brand focused on creating thoughtful clothing using natural and low-impact materials.

But this project showed us that the values behind slow fashion can extend far beyond the wardrobe.

Whether it is a garment, a tote bag, or another product entirely, we believe the same questions are worth asking:

Can we choose better materials?

Can we honour the people who make them?

Can we be transparent about what they are made of?

For us, those questions will always be at the heart of good design.

And sometimes, they lead to something as simple and meaningful, as a tote bag.

Selesa is a Malaysian slow fashion brand and social enterprise committed to thoughtful design, ethical production, and artisan craftsmanship. Through every piece we create, we hope to encourage a more intentional way of consuming and making.
